Breast Augmentation
Transaxillary
Transaxillary Breast Augmentation (Armpit Approach) has been a popular breast augmentation approach for many years since there are no scars on the breasts, only near them concealed in one of the skin folds in the armpits. The implants may be placed either above or below the chest muscle. The scars usually heal well, and are only faintly visible if at all with the arms held straight up over the head. Transaxillary breast augmentation is more difficult than procedures that leave scars directly on the breasts, such as the breast crease (IMC) approach or the around the areola (Periareolar) approach. Therefore, some surgeons do not offer this type of surgical approach.

Usually round implants, either textured or smooth are placed through the Transaxillary Breast Augmentation approach due to the fact that anatomic or teardrop shaped implants may rotate. However, teardrop shaped implants may be placed through this approach as well.

Recovery is the same as the TransUmbilical Breast Augmentation approach (TUBA) procedure and is shorter for above the muscle implants and somewhat longer for below the chest muscle implants. For those patients who would not be a candidate for the Transaxillary breast augmentation, the TUBA approach would be a good alternative, if scars on the breasts were not advisable.
