Blepharoplasty or Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty or Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery is a combination of surgical procedures designed to give a more youthful appearance to the eyes. The eyes are the windows to the soul and the first facial feature seen by others in daily encounters. Puffy or baggy eyelids give a person a tired or concerned look. Some individuals come from families where puffy eyes are inherited, thus they are not the result of age or sun damage. These individuals are often candidates for surgery in their twenties or thirties, whereas, others are candidates for this type of surgery in their thirties or forties. The procedure, however, is performed in all age groups, even as young as the teenage years for certain deformities.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty usually consists of removal of excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids by utilizing incisions that are hidden in the natural folds. This makes the incisions virtually invisible after normal healing takes place.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is either performed by concealing an incision in a natural wrinkle line, which is present under the lashes of the lower eyelid, with an extension into the natural crowsfoot area, or is performed by hiding a similar incision inside the lower eyelid. Both types of incisions are virtually undetectable after normal healing takes place. If excess skin and fat require removal, the external incision will be utilized. If only fat removal is required, the internal incision is used. This is called transconjunctival blepharoplasty. If the skin is wrinkled, laser skin resurfacing of the lower eyelid may be performed at the same time or upto  six months later.

Blepharoplasty is normally performed under IV or intravenous sedation, and requires one to two weeks for slight bruising and swelling to disappear. The procedure is almost painless, and the person usually returns to normal daily activities in 1 – 2 days. The results obtained from blepharoplasty are often quite dramatic and immediate. Blepharoplasty alone will not lift a sagging forehead. Some individuals require a forehead or coronal lift at the same time to maximize the rejuvenation of the upper face.
